Turtle Creek Vineyard sign

If you have been to downtown Kerrville, you have probably come across Turtle Creek Olives & Vines. I last visited there in 2022 and wrote how they had an olive orchard, vineyard, and the winery’s production facility eight miles from downtown Kerrville. At the time, I was told that they were planning on opening a tasting room at the production facility sometime in the future. That future has come as the Turtle Creek Vineyard Tasting Room is now open.

I visited there recently to see the vineyard and new tasting room. A tree-lined road greets you upon your arrival as you make your way up the road and to the tasting room’s parking lot. Vineyards surround the area around the tasting room for a total of 12 acres. Grapes being grown are Montepulciano, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Tannat, and Mourvèdre. There used to be olive trees, but recent weather conditions didn’t let them survive.

The tasting room opened in March 2024 for walk-in tastings, and the entrance is in the back (go around the back, across the patio, and enter the back door). The beautiful building and setting are adjacent to Turtle Creek, hence the name of the winery.

Turtle Creek

The large tasting room has a corner tasting bar which I sat at. I surveyed the room and building which looked like a former house and I found out later it was indeed. The wines available at the vineyard location are a little different from the Turtle Creek Olives & Vines location as the vineyard wines are either wine club or estate wines only. If a wine lover wants those wines, you must go to the vineyard location.

  • 2022 Trebbiano – 75% Texas High Plains, 25% Estate
  • 2022 Estate Montepulciano – their signature grape – 100% Estate
  • 2021 Estate Red Blend – 60% Montepulciano, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot

Other wines available by the glass or bottle are:

  • 2023 Estate Trebbiano – 100% Estate
  • 2023 Hill Country Roussanne – LJ Vineyards at Bridget’s Basket
  • 2023 Estate Rosé – 67% Tannat, 33% Mourvèdre – 100% Estate

The winemaker for Turtle Creek Vineyards is Kyle Allen who I met at a previous Hill Country Wine Symposium. Besides wine, Turtle Creek imports olive oil from Italy.

The winery is owned by Dan and Sue Schulse and during my tasting, Dan Schulse walked in. I had an enjoyable conversation with him, and he is excited about the future of Turtle Creek Vineyard. I can see why, and I look forward to making a return visit.
