If you’re looking for estate wines at a Texas winery, look no further than Seventh Son Vineyards in Wimberley. The winery is owned by Edward “Ned” and Angela Murphy. Ned also provides the winemaker duties while he works with another winemaker at a custom crush facility.
When you arrive at the winery, you’ll be greeted by an automatic gate that is closed. A sign informs you though that if you pull forward, the gate will open. Traveling down the curvy driveway in the woods, you’ll eventually arrive at the tasting room near the estate vineyard.
The couple planted Mourvèdre in a test block in 2016 and more was planted in 2018. Picpoul Blanc was planted in 2019 and since they learned it flourished in their soil, they planted more in 2023. Other varieties planted are Montepulciano and Tempranillo for a total of 3.5 acres under vine. The tasting room opened July 2021.
The tasting room building has a log cabin feel to it with stone and rustic wood siding culminating in an attractive building. The interior continues the look of stone and rustic wood with a gorgeous interior featuring a stone fireplace, tables, lounge chairs, and a U-shaped tasting bar.
I met Ned Murphy, and he was the one who provided my wine tasting. There are three tasting flights provided if you decide not to enjoy a glass of wine:
- Texas Whites:
- 2022 Seventh Son Estate Picpoul Blanc
- 2022 Trans Pecos Sauvignon Blanc (off-dry, West Texas)
- 2022 Hill Country Mourvèdre Rosé (Driftwood vineyard)
- Texas Reds:
- 2020 Hill Country Sangiovese (Driftwood vineyard)
- 2020 Hill Country Mourvèdre (Driftwood vineyard)
- 2020 Hill Country Tempranillo (Driftwood vineyard)
- Estate Wines:
- 2022 Seventh Son Estate Picpoul Blanc
- 2021 Seventh Son Estate Mourvèdre
- 2021 Seventh Son Estate Montepulciano
Since I was at a winery with an estate vineyard and wines, I opted for the Estate Wines tasting which cost more than the other two tastings, but it was well worth it. The estate wines are higher priced than the other wines because of the limited quantities currently available.

I was impressed with the wine at Seventh Son Vineyards. The word has not gotten out yet where they are a recognizable name which helps at the moment because of the limited quantities of wine. But it will not take long before the word will spread, and people will be heading to the new estate winery in Wimberley.
